# Message Rules

Sentry's automod feature is very powerful. It allows you to create your own custom rules to evaluate against messages that are sent in your server.

Each automod rule consists of one or more conditions and one or more actions to be taken if all of the conditions are met.

Messages sent by Sentry or by a webhook are never tested by Automod. Messages sent by other bots besides Sentry are tested unless you exempt them using a Member Has Role condition.

# Enabled Rules

Only rules that are enabled will be checked. If a rule is disabled, then messages will not be checked against that rule until you enable it again.

# Only Test New Messages

By default, message rules are checked whenever a new message is sent and when messages are edited. If you don't want edited messages to be checked against a particular rule, then enable this option. Newly-posted messages will then be checked, but edited messages will not.

This option is particularly useful for rules that reply with a message based on a text trigger. For example, if you have a rule with condition Content Exactly Equals "!help" that replies with a message directing members on how to use a bot, you should probably enable the "only test new messages" option. Otherwise, mischievous members could edit very old messages to trigger the reply seemingly out of nowhere.

# Threads

Manage Threads must be enabled on the Sentry Bot role in order for Sentry to moderate messages in private threads.

Sentry is able to moderate messages in threads, even if Sentry isn't directly a member of a thread. All messages sent in threads which are under channels that Sentry can view will be tested against your automod rules. Sentry can execute most automod actions without adding itself to a thread, but if Sentry needs to send a message in a thread then Sentry will automatically add itself to the thread.

# Limits

Each server is limited to 5 automod message rules. This limit can be increased to 100 by upgrading your server to Premium. Once you reach your limit, no more rules can be created.

If you subscribe to Premium, create more than 5 rules, and then cancel Premium, these things happen:

  • All enabled rules continue to be processed, even if you have more than 5
  • You won't be able to create any new rules until you delete enough rules such that you have fewer than 5 (enabled or disabled)
  • All rules can be edited without restriction
  • All rules can be disabled without restriction
  • You won't be able to enable any rules that are disabled if enabling that rule would bring your total number of enabled rules over 5
